As per the latest news from Economic Times, Mahindra will continue the 1.99-litre diesel engine SUVs, XUV 500 and Scorpio, in Delhi/NCR after the judgement of the Supreme Court regarding the lifting of heavy diesel vehicle’s registration. The Indian utility vehicle maker has introduced its SUVs with the 1.99-litre engines in the NCR region due to the 2000cc diesel vehicle’s ban initiated in December 2015. At final, the Apex Court has lifted the ban with the one percent of environment cess.
According to Mahindra’s ED Pawan Goenka, there are two reasons to continue the 1.99-litre diesel engine. First, the buyers will not be restricted to buy only the 1.9-litre engine as we are already offering 2.2-litre engines, so there is no reason to change the engine. The second one is that the announcement of the SC is not the final judgment. As of now, it is an internal judgement so that we will continue until the final judgment of the SC.
Further, he added that only one percent of environment cess is not going to work in the NCR region as well as make any difference. That means, one percent of green cess will have any impact in the national capital region. Even though, we have to accept it and move on that.
Currently, the best-selling models (XUV 500 and Scorpio) in the SUV segment are available with the 1.99-litre mHawk engine, which is rated at the similar outputs of the 2.2-litre engine. The specifications and features of new Mahindra’s SUVs are similar to the 2.2-litre engine models.
Apart from this, Mahindra is concentrating on the segment of electric vehicles and announced that it is working on the all-electric SUV, which is coded as Mahindra S107. All electric SUV will hit the market in 2020 with the combination of the new electrical and the popular compact SUV platforms.
