The India-made Baleno and the upcoming Ignis models nominated for the World Car of the year award in the category of World Urban Car of the year. The winners to be declared on the occasion of New York International Auto Show on 13th April 2017. For the nomination of the urban car category, the car will be designed under the sub-4metre length and must be introduced in two continents by the fiscal end.
The Baleno premium hatchback and Ignis measure the overall length of 3995mm and 3700mm respectively. Baleno has already exported to the European countries and Japan, whereas the Ignis has already available in the Japanese market and to be launched in the early next year. Ignis has showcased at the Paris Motor Show so that both models qualified for the World Car of the Year.
In the same urban car category, the BMW i3, Ford KA+ (available as Ford Figo in India), Smart Brabus range and two citrons – the C3 and the E-Mehari are also selected. The administration of the association will conduct a series of tests, drives, voting, as well as for the nominated cars in the coming five months.
The India-specific Baleno is offered in diesel and petrol variants and the engine options are 1.3-litre 75bhp diesel engine and 1.2-litre 84bhp petrol engine. Both engines offered with the 5-speed manual gearbox as standard transmission while the petrol one additionally offered with the CVT gearbox. The export-specific Baleno is powered by the highly efficient 1.0-litre BoosterJet engine.
The small crossover will be featured the both petrol and diesel engine options, 1.2-litre K12B petrol and 1.3-litre DDiS diesel. The reports state that the SHVS mild hybrid technology to be offered in the sub-4metre Ignis, which will come to India soon.
