Mahindra & Mahindra, the
Indian biggest UV maker is planning to introduce the petrol versions of all Mahindra
models from 2018. Each and every product will have the petrol variants in the
coming years and the company is working on the new petrol engines, according to
Pawan Goenka, ED of M&M. As per the reports, Mahindra is developing on the 1.5-litre
petrol engine and the 1.2-litre (mFalcon G80) petrol engine is already
introduced in the Mahindra KUV 100, new small crossover. Accordingly, the upcoming
Mahindra portfolio will be offered with any of three petrol engines, 1.2-litre,
1.5-litre or 2.0-litre.
Currently, the petrol variants
have more demand in the Indian market due to the Supreme Court’s order, registration
ban of heavy diesel vehicles with the more than 2000cc diesel engine. To catch the
increasing demand for petrol cars, the automakers are planning to introduce the
petrol powered cars. Mahindra’s best-selling cars, XUV 500 and Scorpio, have
been affected in the Delhi and NCR with the SC’s order so that the UV maker has
introduced the 1.99-litre mHawk engine in both models.
According to the SIAM report, the
contribution of diesel cars declined from 44 percent to 41 percent in the total
passenger vehicle sales in this fiscal year, compared to the same period of previous
fiscal. While the petrol car’s share is increased
to 59 percent in this fiscal from 56 percent in the last fiscal year.
KUV 100 is the first crossover
from Mahindra introduced with the diesel and petrol engines in January 2016. Most
of the Indian customers opt for the KUV 100 petrol versions as of the affordable
price and the several restrictions on diesel vehicles. The carmaker expected
that the 40 percent of customers interested to buy the petrol versions, but the
result was 50 percent in India.
We expected that the upcoming
compact Bolero will get the petrol as well as automatic versions to target the
segment brands. Mahindra is considering the new-generation models, which will
be developed by the association of SsangYong, for the domestic market. Along
with the petrol segment, Mahindra is also concentrating on the category of hybrid
and electric vehicles.
